Murray is a charming destination offering a variety of enjoyable activities. Savor delicious local cuisine, explore cultural exhibits at the university, and take a scenic walk through campus. Discover unique local traditions and enjoy dinner at a popular hangout spot. End your day with a peaceful sunset in a beautiful arboretum. The next morning, start with a hearty breakfast downtown and spend some time browsing local shops and a bustling farmers market.
Day 1 – A leisurely outdoor day
Hungry for a bite? Stop in at the Willow Bistro. This local establishment is a hidden gem in Murray. Fantastic seasonal specials are offered during lunch, ranging from soups to curry dishes. The menu reflects a middle eastern and asian fusion, providing options for vegetarian and vegan diets. Thursdays are the best days – it’s Tikka Masala day! And always, always order the freshly-made guacamole!
A short walk onto campus and into the Fine Arts Building of Murray State University leads into the multi-level Clara M. Eagle Gallery showcasing different exhibits designed by current students and faculty. Throughout the year, new exhibits are rotated, offering a new and exciting experience each visit.
Take a walk through the Quad and past the Shoe Tree. This timeless and heartwarming tradition signifies couples who meet while at Murray State and they each attach a shoe to the tree. Closely look and you will even find precious baby shoes! Be sure and rub the shoe of the Rainey T. Wells Statue, just down from the Shoe Tree – it brings good luck.
Before heading to a magical sunset at Doran Arboretum at Murray State, stop in for dinner at Tap 216. Here you will find the hangout for college students locals alike. And maybe even stick around for trivia!
To cap off the evening, head to the Doran Arboretum at Murray State for sunset. The calm and beautiful scene as the sun goes down is the perfect way to say goodnight. Listen for the cicadas and frogs as they sing an evening tune.
Day 2 – A Morning Walk and Tasty Downtown Foods
Start the morning with a walk through the Doran Arboretum at Murray State. Early morning feels so drastically different than sunset. The crisp, cool mornings lend to a calming vibe that sets the tone for day.
Head downtown for the best breakfast in town at Rudy’s on the Square. The oldest restaurant in Murray is a traditional meat ‘n three for lunch, but it doesn’t compare to that first meal of the day.
Afterward, hit up some of the local retail establishments in downtown. Main Street Market is an eclectic gourmet grocery store with interesting snacks and locally made items. For the bookworms, hit up our local independent bookstore, Bolin Books. If visiting downtown lands on a summer Saturday, that’s the best luck of all. The Murray Farmers market will be popping will all sorts of artisans, produce and baked goods to take some Murray back home.
