 L+A+N+D (Landscape + Art + Nature + Design) celebrates innovative design concepts for immersive outdoor installations on a grand scale that spark imaginations, conversations and a deeper appreciation of the natural world. Ten experiences will address beauty in the landscape, biodiversity, conservation, sustainability and climate change.

Ongoing efforts to catalog the diversity of life found within Bernheim have found at least 911 species of plants, 47 mammals, 82 snails, over 400 moths, and a host of other overlooked organisms.

In conjunction with several universities, we are investigating the long-term survivability of seedlings of several species of tree. The trees are tracked in undisturbed settings, under prescribed fire conditions, and in natural canopy gaps formed by tree mortality.

Examination of the bat population within Bernheim, including acoustic monitoring and counts that provide information to determine if populations are declining. Thirteen species of bats have been identified at Bernheim in the last four years.

Since 2015, Bernheim has been tracking a golden eagle from its wintering grounds in Bernheim through its migration to northern Manitoba. The same eagle, Athena, returns to Bernheim each winter, adding to our knowledge of her migration patterns. Bernheim participates in yearly counts of golden and bald eagles.

Monitoring of several rare, threatened and endangered plant and animal species in Bernheim to track population stability. Species currently being monitored include glade violets, several orchids, whip-poor-wills, amphibians, reptiles and other at-risk species.
